4. "Essays Fast and Loose: A Christmas Miscellany." 76 pages. Published in November 1996. $7.
Quirky essays about the O.J. Simpson trial, corporate executive greed, my sciatica and how Medicare prevents medical provider rip-offs, earning free cruises by dancing with unattached ladies, boredom induced by the Olympic Games, Colin Powell's deficiencies as a potential presidential candidate, and a wonderful Greek island.

DEDICATION: For Louise, my wife of 45 years, who
hasn't agreed with all that I've written, but who has always
encouraged me to be true to my better instincts, my better
angels.

ABOUT THE TITLE: It came to me in a dream,
which in my view is a sacred source of inspiration. According
to the dictionary, to "play fast and loose" means 'to act in an
irresponsible or inconsiderate manner, esp. to employ
deception to gain one's ends: He played fast and loose with
her affections." (Webster's New Universal Unabridged
Dictionary, Barnes & Noble Books, 1992, page 1104.) I
believe a more common use these days is to play fast
and loose with the truth, not with someone's affections.

NOTE:
In the August 19, 1996, Washington Post
Business section there was a listing under "New
Incorporations" in the District of Columbia for the "Five and
Ten Pass Inc., 3814 Livingston St. N.W." This could be seen
as a bad omen, except that it was most likely an error
committed by an unqualified proofreader rather than a
prediction by an astute astrologer.

THANKS: Once again, my special thanks to my
daughter, Michal Keeley, for editing this miscellany and
improving it immeasurably.

THE STRANGE CASE OF THE BLOODY
GLOVES AND THE DEFICIENT
TIME LINE
Sherlock Holmes would have solved the 0. J.
Simpson case easily, by using elementary logic and deductive
reasoning in his inimitable way. Proposition A: Some Los
Angeles police detectives attempted to ensure a conviction
of Simpson (if he was guilty) or conducted a frame-up (if he
was not) by manufacturing and planting evidence, their
racism was exposed during the trial, and this ensured his
acquittal. Proposition B: Simpson committed the murders,
and the evidence to support a guilty verdict was obtainable,
but it was not obtained and was therefore not presented in
court. Proposition C: The activities of the rogue LAPD cops
doomed the prosecution's case because they forced the
prosecution to present an illogical scenario. Proposition D:
The jury was correct in voting unanimously for acquittal
because the prosecution's case was defective. All four
propositions are true.
It strains credulity to believe that someone as
intelligent or at least as careful as Simpson would leave one
bloody glove behind at the scene of the crime and then carry
the other bloody glove around with him for a length of time
and eventually back to his own house only to drop it in the
yard where it could be found. The bloody glove found by
Mark Fuhrman at Simpson's house was planted there by
some officer investigating the case. The drops of blood
found in Simpson's house were also planted there by some
other detective, at least one of whom was known to have ...
